PSHE Policy

 

Aims and Objectives

 

Children will leave Westgate with the skills, knowledge and understanding to be healthy, independent and responsible members of society able to confidently manage the physical, emotional, moral, cultural and social issues of living in the 21st Century.

 

  1. To develop children’s understanding of their own physical health and wellbeing through knowledge of diet, exercise, medicines and drugs.
  2. To develop children’s understanding of their own emotional health and well-being, including developing children’s emotional literacy in order to discuss and manage their feelings and respect the feelings of others.
  3. To develop children’s understanding of themselves and their relationships with others, including online.
  4. To develop children’s understanding of their role in the wider world, including their rights and responsibilities and fundamental British values.
  5. To develop children’s understanding of managing risks and keeping themselves safe, including online.
  6. To develop children’s key personal qualities of resilience, confidence, respect and responsibility. 

 

Approach

Although PSHE is taught weekly across the school in discrete lessons, the children’s skills, knowledge and understanding is continually revisited and applied throughout the school every day through the school’s culture and ethos.  This includes through our program of assemblies, behaviour policy, PE lessons, lunchtime activities, conflict resolution, emotionally aware classrooms and the way that adults model ready, respectful and safe attitudes throughout the school. 

 

Assembly themes include: Respect, Kindness, Independence, Perseverance and Trust.  Visitors have included road safety training, fire safety visits, NSPCC workshops as well as fortnightly assemblies led by our local vicar.  Each classroom has a calm corner with resources to support children with emotional regulation and all teaching assistants have had training in emotion coaching.  We take part in national healthy schools week each year, often including a mental health theme. The Taking Care program (protective behaviours) is embedded across the school with a focus week in the Autumn term which is reinforced and revisited throughout the year.  

 

We use a variety of teaching methods and activities to deliver the PSHE curriculum and promote long-term learning and retrieval including: questioning, role-play (including the use of puppets/characters – one step removed), discussion, problem-solving, research, visits/visitors, quizzes and information technology. 

 

Curriculum organisation

 

EYFS

Children learn through their topics and daily modelling and support from skilled adults.  Learning is linked to the Early Learning Goals for Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, and Understanding the World.  Learning in EYFS takes place through a mix of adult led and child initiated activities.  Children follow the ‘Time to Talk’ program which encourages speaking and listening skills through sharing, turn-taking and discussing feelings. The Taking Care program is taught across the whole school in a focus week in the Autumn term.

 

Key Stage 1 and 2

The PSHE curriculum at Westgate uses the Twinkl Life Scheme of Work which is fully in line with the PSHE Association Programme of Study and fulfils the statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education (2020).  It is taught through a rolling program of 12 topics – 1 for each half term across 2 school years (See PSHE Curriculum Map Overview and PSHE Long Term Plan).  The topic titles then repeat, building on the knowledge and skills gained in previous years.  The Taking Care program is taught across the whole school in a focus week in the Autumn term.

 

Resources (including visits)

Subject leaders work with teachers to ensure resources are available for teaching their topics.  Most resources are available through Twinkl Life.  Visitors are invited into school to support some areas of learning eg Road safety, fire safety.

 

Inclusion and Equal Opportunities

All learners will be given equal opportunities to access the PSHE curriculum. They will be supported or challenged through differentiation. Planning will reflect the varying needs of all the children in the class. Where possible, the diverse society in which we live will be reflected in the teaching and learning of this subject.  Children’s cultural and religious beliefs will be taken into consideration and respected throughout the teaching of PSHE.  Parents are kept informed about the content of sex and relationships based lessons.  As per government guidelines, parents have the right to withdraw their child from Sex education lessons (see RSE policy). 

 

Assessing, Recording and Monitoring

End of topic assessments are carried out by the class teacher and shared with the subject coordinator.  The teacher uses a range of evidence to make their judgements which may include pupils’ work, contributions in lessons, quizzes and projects.  Subject leaders carry out a range of monitoring activities as detailed in the Teaching and Learning Policy. 

 

Safety

All equipment is checked for signs of damaged and replaced as needed.  All trips are risk assessed.  All content for lesson delivery follows statutory guidance.  Children are reminded of their right to leave the lesson if the content makes them feel emotionally unsafe due to their individual experiences.  Teachers will follow this up with the pupils to give additional support and guidance as needed.
