Spellings

Spellings are to be practised using the online platform: Spelling Frame.

Here is a bit of information about how it works:

  • The words to be learned (not including the high frequency words) are shown in a sentence, then in syllables. The children have to choose the correct syllables, then the correct spelling, then they have to type the word correctly.
  • There are games and practice activities that the children will enjoy.
  • Tests are carried out on the website and they can take a test as many times as they want in order to earn “points”.
  • If a child gets a spelling wrong, it is shown to them again (working through the syllables to the spelling) until they type it in correctly.
  • Any spelling that a child gets wrong in a test is added to their “Tricky List” and they have to spell it correctly twice in a test in order to clear it.

We encourage the children to carry out at least 15 minutes of practice games and at least one test on the week’s words and those on their “Tricky List”.

Here are example lists of the rules and spellings they will be practicing over the year:

Other ways to practise spellings:

  • Make sure you understand the meanings of the words - can you put them into a sentence?
  • Use the spellings for handwriting practice
  • Look, cover, write and check
  • Rainbow words (using a different colour for each of the letters of sounds)
  • Word pyramids (writing the word one letter at a time until you build up the the whole world)
  • Make your own word search or crossword
