Spellings

Hello! When practising their spelling words at school, the children have been splitting the words into their syllables before using their sounds to spell each of those syllables.

e.g. for explain

Syllables:     ex / plain

Sounds:       explain 

This helps the children to see words as consisting of individual sounds and the corresponding spelling of those sounds, rather than a single unit to be learned as a chunk. Not only will this make learning the weekly spellings easier, but it will also give the children a technique to use when they are trying to spell unfamiliar words in different contexts. If you are helping your child by practicing the weekly spelling words at home, please encourage them to use this technique.
