  • Norean is Awarded a Rotary Star

    Sat 30 Jul 2022

Champion disc golf youngster receives Warwick Rotary Star Award

A TRAILBLAZING youngster from Warwick has received a Rotary Star Award for her incredible achievements in an up-and-coming sport.

Nine-year-old Norean Woodhead, from Westgate Primary School, is disc golf British champion in her age range. She also ranks third in the world and will be representing the UK at the American Open Championship this summer.

As a result of these mammoth achievements, Noreen was awarded the Warwick Rotary Club’s Star Award – given to primary school pupils who have made an outstanding contribution to their community – at a special celebratory assembly at her school.

Disc golf involves 18 metal baskets being placed over a course of three miles and a disc – very much like a frisbee – is thrown into each of these baskets in turn.

The idea is to complete the course with the least number of throws. As in golf obstacles such as trees and bushes are planted in strategic places. The sport is gaining in popularity around the world.

Headmaster Matthew Watson said: “Norean is one of our most helpful young people especially with the younger children. She thoroughly deserves her award.

“Due to Norean’s achievements we have been given our own metal basket which has been placed in the school forest area so all our children can benefit”.

Rotarian Margaret Morley added: “Rotary wants to recognise all the efforts of our young people towards others and this can take many forms”.

  • Tilly is Awarded a Rotary Star

Rotary Star awarded at Westgate Primary School,

There was a surprise at Westgate School assembly this morning at when Warwick’s Mayor dropped in to join the pupils. He was joined by Rotary President- Elect Keith Talbot, and Rotarian Margaret Morley, initiator of the Rotary Stars project, to make an award to a special pupil.

Rotary Stars allow schools to recognise and reward young people for caring and compassion towards others and their environment. Head Mathew Watson encourages pupils to get involved in helping each other and encourages empathy. Tilly-Rea Blackburn was presented with a certificate, a gift card and a small Rotary Star badge by the Mayor.

Tilly-Rea took the initiative to find small items around town to complete a Shoebox with small toys, items of clothing, toothpaste etc. to send to children in Ukraine and others in need in Eastern Europe. She then went on to complete more and help to pack other boxes before they were sent under the Rotary Shoebox scheme. Organiser Sue Melville nominated Tilly-Rea for the award in recognition of her help and dedication to “make a difference” to those less fortunate.

Tilly-Rea’s parents were there to see the award presented and remarked on her enthusiasm to help others. Head Mathew Watson said, “Rotary has given us the opportunity to recognise and reward children for achievements outside the normal school curriculum”.

Peace gardens aim to spread a message of hope through Warwickshire

PEACE gardens could soon be cropping up across Warwickshire. A campaign from The Heart of England Rotary Clubs to promote peace and wellbeing among young people, is being rolled out across the county.

So far, the project has seen pupils clear a peace garden area on school grounds at Westgate Primary in Warwick, after which they were awarded a ‘peace pole’ – an internationally-recognised symbol for peace – by the club.

Now other schools are being invited to submit their design for a peace garden and the winning entry will be presented with their own bespoke peace pole, donated by the Heart of England Rotary Clubs.

The competition forms part of a drive to tackle the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, discrimination, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.

The club is also working with Newburgh and Aylesford Primary Schools as well as Warwick Town Council which plans to introduce a wooden peace pole into the town’s Pageant Gardens, incorporating languages from its twin towns in France, Germany and Italy.

With an estimated 250,000 across the globe, peace poles represent a celebration of amity and collaboration between different countries too.

Warwick Rotarian Margaret Morley said: “As an organisation Rotary is totally committed to working with schools in any way they feel necessary to support their Peace Education Curriculum and encourage a culture of peace, which is so important in today’s society.

“Promoting peace is a Rotary area of focus as well as part of the school curriculum. It’s not just about planting a peace pole it’s about working with schools to encourage young people to think about what peace means.

“Peace poles are so important as they take children out of the classroom, they provide areas of tranquillity and reflection, so important with mental health issues. They also encourage an interest in the environment with planting and growing.

“The peace pole is a constant reminder that we are working together to create a caring and compassionate society.

“Children love them, ceremonies can be planned around them to encourage a culture of peace within the school.”

Headteacher at Westgate Primary School, Matthew Watson said the project demonstrated the wealth of community support available to local children.

He added: “The raised bed that now houses the peace pole was unearthed and now provides a slightly separated area for contemplation. This will eventually have peaceful planting around it and will hopefully provide a focus for Remembrance Day and other fixed points in the year when the curriculum provides links to peace.

“The focus on mental wellbeing and finding solutions where they could be alone and peaceful has been reassuring in these difficult times.”

  • January Return

Mon 04 Jan 2021 Mr. Watson

Back to School on Tuesday 5th January 2021

    04/01/2021

    Dear Parents & Carers,

Happy New Year! There is much in the news and on social media about the return to school this week. We continue to plan for the return of children tomorrow. Should there be any change to arrangements we will let you know as soon as we can.

There will undoubtedly be a lot of anxiety and uncertainty for parents and children, as there has been from staff, around the return to school with so much in the news about coronavirus. We have reviewed and updated our risk assessment and will be taking all steps possible to keep the children and staff as safe as possible.

Please can I remind parents for the need to follow the timings for the staggered start to reduce the risk of transmission between children in different year groups. Please can I also stress the need for social distancing of 2 metres between parents when they are waiting at the gate and when they are collecting their children at the end of the school day. The one-way system is still in operation through the site and it is important that it is followed by everyone. Parents and carers should not be parking in the road alongside the school car park to drop-off or pick-up their children, as this creates a dangerous hazard for parents and children leaving the site through the one-way system.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you that the children should not be carrying unnecessary items between home and school. Pencil cases are not required as equipment will be provided by school and the children don’t need large bags with them. The children should only bring in reading books on days when these need to be changed and they can have a separate reading book at home and in school. Please continue to bring water bottles and healthy morning snacks to school on a daily basis. Whenever possible, PE lessons will be taking place outside so please ensure that your child has warm clothing on their PE days.

As always, the safety of the Westgate children and staff are paramount in our minds. Sending you best wishes for 2021 from all staff and governors at Westgate Primary School

    Yours sincerely,

    Matthew Watson

    Head Teacher

Thank you so much to the Lions for donating five Chromebooks to be used by Westgate Primary School pupils during the lockdown period and beyond. The Chromebooks will be used over the coming weeks by children who do not have ready access to a computer at home so that they can keep up with their studies. Many thanks again to Tamara and the Lions for their generosity.
