Norean is Awarded a Rotary Star

Champion disc golf youngster receives Warwick Rotary Star Award

A TRAILBLAZING youngster from Warwick has received a Rotary Star Award for her incredible achievements in an up-and-coming sport.

Nine-year-old Norean Woodhead, from Westgate Primary School, is disc golf British champion in her age range. She also ranks third in the world and will be representing the UK at the American Open Championship this summer.

As a result of these mammoth achievements, Noreen was awarded the Warwick Rotary Club’s Star Award – given to primary school pupils who have made an outstanding contribution to their community – at a special celebratory assembly at her school.

Disc golf involves 18 metal baskets being placed over a course of three miles and a disc – very much like a frisbee – is thrown into each of these baskets in turn.

The idea is to complete the course with the least number of throws. As in golf obstacles such as trees and bushes are planted in strategic places. The sport is gaining in popularity around the world.

Headmaster Matthew Watson said: “Norean is one of our most helpful young people especially with the younger children. She thoroughly deserves her award.

“Due to Norean’s achievements we have been given our own metal basket which has been placed in the school forest area so all our children can benefit”.

Rotarian Margaret Morley added: “Rotary wants to recognise all the efforts of our young people towards others and this can take many forms”.
